A shawl, a Portuguese guitar, a voice, and a deep feeling. A recognized symbol of Portugal, this simple image can describe Fado, a world music that is Portuguese.
In essence, it sings of feelings, heartbreak, longing for someone who has passed away, daily life, and achievements. After all, the encounters and disencounters of life are an endless source of inspiration.
They say that Fado is Fado, that it comes from within the Portuguese soul and there are no divisions to be made. Even so, some dare to distinguish between professional and amateur. The first is sung by those who make their living from their voice. The second, also known as "vadio" (vagrant), has other characteristics, although the nostalgic nature is the same. In 2011, Fado was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
